Researchers

The Process

If you are a UWA researcher, then this page is especially relevant to you.

If you have a research discovery/invention that you believe may be of commercial significance, you can begin the commercialisation process by:

  • Contacting the Office of Industry and Innovation
Your first point of contact should be with The Office of Industry and Innovation, so that we can offer advice on your particular project.
  • Referring to the Overview and Commercialisation Guidelines
  • Completing an IP Disclosure and Evaluation Form
Completing this form and fowarding it to The Office of Industry and Innovation will assist us to understand the commercialisation possibilities for your project, from a market viewpoint.
  • Familiarising yourself with the UWA's Intellectual Property Regulations.
This will help you to understand your rights and responsibilities.
  • Understanding the UWA Commercialisation Protocols.  These are guidelines with regard to the formation of and operation of UWA spin-out companies.  Company formation must be discussed with the Office of Industry and Innovation before proceeding.
  • Referring to the Biotechnology Australia, 2001, Biotechnology IP Management Training Manual.
Chapter 8 of this manual is provided courtesy of Biotechnology Australia so that you can gain a more complete understanding of the commercialisation process and options.

The Office of Industry and Innovation will work with you to assess the discovery/invention using internal and external resources as appropriate, with a focus more on the commercial likelihood rather than the ability to patent the discovery/invention.

It is critical that you understand the level of commitment required to commercialise your work. The Office of Industry and Innovation is keen to form a partnership with you, to explore the commercialisation possibilities of your work.
